Update On The Girls: 5 Months

How are my baby girls almost half a year old?! Time has flown by even faster the second time around! (Please excuse the questionable photography job on their monthly pictures...it was Christmas and we were busy!!!)

Adelyn at 5 Months:

Emery at 5 Months:

Some facts from the girl's third month of life:
-Wearing 3-6 Month clothes.
-Wearing Size 2 or Size 3 diapers.
-Eating 4 times per day. They take an 8 ounce bottle at all of their feedings. They still have pumped breastmilk in their bottles, but are quickly being switched over to formula.
-They are sleeping in their crib at night and for all naps. They go down for the night at 7:00pm and don't wake up until 7:00am!! They are great night sleepers, which has been an incredible blessing for all of us! They take 3 naps per day.
-Doing well on the eat/play/sleep routine!

Random things we don't want to forget:
-The girls are getting close to rolling from their back to their belly. They roll to their sides and then get angry until we roll them all the way over.
-They started solids at the end of this month. They started with avocados. They have also tried peas and green beans. Adelyn knows how to eat, but doesn't seem to like anything. Emery seems to love the taste of the food, but hasn't quite caught on to how to keep the food in her mouth.
-Emery is laughing and giggling. Adelyn starts smiling, and then turns her head away shyly. They are both too cute!
-They love their jumperoos. Emery is a wild and crazy jumper, and she ends up flinging herself all over the place. Adelyn is a very controlled jumper, always jumping straight up and down. Seeing them next to each other is hilarious.
-Big brother Benton is definitely their favorite source of entertainment. He ma
kes them smile. :) He also loves to hug them and give them kisses. Occasionally, you can see a terrified look on their faces when he approaches...it's probably a healthy fear. Ha!
-They both love being outside!

Update On The Girls: 4 Months

The days are going by so quickly here! We are grateful for happy, healthy 4 month olds!!!!

Adelyn at 4 Months:

Emery at 4 Months:

Some facts from the girl's fourth month of life:
-Wearing 3-6 Month clothes.
-Wearing Size 2 diapers.
-Eating 5 times per day. They take a 6 ounce bottle at every feeding. They still have pumped breastmilk in their bottles.
-They are sleeping in their crib at night and for all naps. They go down for the night at around 7:00pm and don't wake up until 7:00am. They nap 3 times per day.
-Doing well on the eat/play/sleep routine!

Random things we don't want to forget:
-Both girls are rolling from belly to back. Emery went through a short stage where she was trying to roll all night long. Oh my goodness, it was an exhausting few nights.
-They sit very well in their bumbo chairs. Usually they either sit face to face and stare at each other, or they sit in their activity gym and play with toys.
-They are starting to really enjoy tummy time and their necks and arms are getting strong!
-Emery was a zebra and Adelyn was a giraffe for Halloween. We went to the fall festival at church and trick-or-treated in the neighborhood.
-The family celebrated Thanksgiving at Grammy and Champ's house. Both girls were sweet, cranky, and well-loved. :)
-As of a few days ago, they are giving wonderfully slobbery open mouth kisses.

Happy (late) Halloween!

We had a great Halloween! Our neighborhood went all out, and everyone had a wonderful time. Benton didn't really know what was going on, but he knew it was something different and fun. :) My parents, Carl, and Whitney stayed at our house to watch the girls and hand out candy, and Landon and I took Benton around our neighborhood. Once we were finished making our rounds, we headed back to the house to hand out candy for the rest of the evening. Benton loved handing out candy and kept dancing on the porch in between trick-or-treaters...so cute!

We dressed the kids up as their "monthly animal," which is the stuffed animal that we take their picture with every month. As much as I wanted to do something really fun with all the kids and their costumes, we knew that staying simple was better this year.

Benton was a monkey (who DID NOT want his picture taken).
Adelyn was a giraffe.
Emery was a zebra.

Clydesdales

Last weekend, we took Benton and the girls to see the clydesdales at the Express Ranch in Yukon. When we walked up to the barn, they were brushing the most beautiful and HUGE clydesdale. It was so fun see the horses and pet them...and, yes, Ben actually pet the clydesdales!!! They also have mini horses, a zebra, cows, and dogs. Ben seemed to really enjoy the outing!

Update On The Girls: 3 Months

Happy 3 Months to our baby girls! This month we have really started to feel more normal. The girls are sleeping more and things seem a little more calm. Yay!

Adelyn at 3 Months:

Emery at 3 Months:

Some facts from the girl's third month of life:
-Wearing 0-3 Month clothes.
-Wearing Size 1 or Size 1-2 diapers.
-Eating 6 times per day. They take a 4-4.5 ounce bottle at all feedings, except their last feeding of the day, when they take a 5-5.5 ounce bottle. They still have pumped breastmilk in their bottles.
-They are sleeping in their crib at night and for all naps. They are now sleeping in their own cribs. They go down for the night at around 8:30pm and don't wake up until 6-7am!!! Yay sleep!
-Doing well on the eat/play/sleep routine!

Random things we don't want to forget:
-Their little personalities continue to be so different. Adelyn is more social and alert, while Emery is more relaxed and laid back.
-Adelyn rolled over from her belly to her back at 2 months and 1 day old. Other a few times during naps, she hasn't done it since. Emery hasn't even attempted to roll over. :)
-Emery sucks her bottle down in record time. She wastes no time and is all business. Adelyn, on the other hand, leisurely drinks her bottle. She stares at pictures on walls and tries to smile and talk. Emery probably drinks her bottle twice as fast as Adelyn.
-We had to separate the girls into their own cribs for sleeping at night and at naps. The same scenario was playing out over and over again, and we felt like it was disrupting their sleep. We would put the girls a couple of feet apart...Emery would somehow scoot over to Adelyn to cuddle...Adelyn would wake up for a second and elbow Emery in the head...Adelyn would go back to sleep...Emery would be fighting mad and not go back to sleep. Ha! Now they scoot so that they are in their own cribs, but as close to each other as possible.
-They love to smile and coo, especially with their daddy!

Pumpkin Patch 2011

Today, we ventured out to the Parkhurst Pumpkin Patch in Arcadia. Landon and I LOVE going to different pumpkin patches, and this is one that we will revisit. It had something for everyone in the family to enjoy, and most of it was shaded by big trees (woohoo on a warm day...usually we just roast the whole time). Here are some pictures of the fun!!!

A Date With My Firstborn

Last Friday, my mom came over and watched the girls so that I could take Benton on a date to the park. We had so much fun!!!!

First up, feeding the ducks (or eating the bread and watching the ducks)...

Next, a picnic lunch...

Last, playing at the park...

I am so grateful for individual time with Ben. He is growing so fast and learning so many things every day.

Update On The Girls: 2 Months Continued

The girls had their 2 month well child check-up today! They are doing very well and we couldn't be more grateful!

Adelyn's Stats:
-Weight: 10 pounds, 4 ounces (5th percentile)
-Height: 21 1/4 inches (25th percentile)
-Head Circumference: 15 inches (25th percentile)

Emery's Stats:
-Weight: 10 pounds, 4 ounces (5th percentile)
-Height: 21 inches (25th percentile)
-Head Circumference: 15 1/4 inches (25th percentile)

Can you believe that the girls still weigh the same? So funny. I guess they do eat the same amount at the same time every day, so it makes sense, but you would think they would be an ounce off or something. :)

At our appointment, they did recommend that we keep the girls out of any kind of childcare for now, including the church nursery, due to their increased risk of RSV. We are sad not to be able to leave them in the nursery and go to Sunday School and church, but happy to do anything for their health. Hopefully they will give us a little more freedom as the girls grow!!!

Update on the Girls: 2 Months

Two months with two babies (plus Benton), and we are all happy and doing more than just surviving!!! :)

Adelyn (sleeping) at 2 Months:

Emery (wide awake) at 2 Months:

Some facts from the girl's second month of life:
-Wearing 0-3 Month clothes. They were in newborn clothes for most of the month, but they moved up in the last week.
-Wearing Size 1 diapers.
-Eating 7 times per day. They take a 4 ounce bottle at all feedings, except their last feeding of the day, when they take a 5 ounce bottle. They were breastfeed for the first part of the month, but we have now switched over to pumped breastmilk, which makes everyone much happier!
-They are sleeping in their crib at night and for all naps. They are still sleeping in the same crib. As of today, they go down for the night at 7:15pm. We do a dreamfeed of sorts at 9:30pm where we give them a bottle, but we try not to wake them. They then wake around 4am on their own, get a bottle, and then are back to bed until we wake them at 7am.
-They are catching on to the eat/play/sleep routine!

Random things we don't want to forget:
-Their little personalities are so different right now. Adelyn is usually wide awake and ready to look around. She checks everything out and is really good about making eye contact. Emery is our chilled out and relaxed baby. She would rather be sleeping, no matter what is going on. :)
-They don't like being in the bouncer or swing. They would prefer to either be held or be on the floor.
-Adelyn seems to be close to rolling over from front to back, but Emery hasn't even tried. Ha!
-They love cuddling. :) Adelyn seems to be okay to sleep by herself in the crib, Emery doesn't. After Adelyn has been out of the crib for a few minutes, Emery starts scooting around the crib looking for Adelyn. If she can't find her, she starts crying. So cute.
-They are purposefully smiling. Double the smiles. :)
-Both girls LOVE watching Benton play, and he loves the audience. It is too funny to watch him entertain them.

Baby girls, we love you!!!

Newborn Pictures

We had Adelyn and Emery's newborn pictures taken by the fabulous Abby Coyle (Abby Coyle Photo Artistry, www.abbycoyle.com) when they were one month old. Can you tell that we love Abby?! She has captured our family so well. :)

Update On The Girls: 1 Month

Our sweet girls are 1 month old! Oh my goodness. Time has flown by so much more quickly than with Benton. They are so sweet and such easy babies (thank goodness), and we are so blessed to have added them to our crazy family.

Adelyn at 1 Month:

Emery at 1 Month:

Some facts from the girl's first month of life:
-Wearing newborn clothes, though they have plenty of room to grow into them.
-Wearing newborn diapers.
-Eating 8 times per day for 20 minutes. They also take a 3 ounce bottle when it is more convenient.
-They are sleeping in their crib at night and for most naps. They sleep in the same crib, all cuddled up and cute. :) Somehow their cries or movements don't wake the other (or their brother). As of right now, Emery is the big cuddler.
-We are working on the eat/play/sleep routine. They do well with the eat and sleep part, and are slowly catching on to the play part.

Random things that we don't want to forget:
-Emery will suck on anything. Anything. Her first choice is any part of Adelyn (ear, head, hand...whatever is close). She likes the pacifier, but isn't exceptionally excited about it.
-Adelyn is somewhat obsessive about the pacifier. We put it in her mouth and she chomps on it with her crazy strong suck, and then she starts touching it with her hands and knocks it out...and has a massive meltdown. Therefore, we only do the pacifier when it is an emergency. :)
-The girls first outing was to the Pediatrician, and after that to Unpluggits to watch big brother play. We have also been to the zoo, Target, the playground, the library, and church.
-Both girls hate hair bows.
-We are stopped anywhere we go by random people.
-We go on walks most every morning, and the girls both fit in the stroller bassinet. They are close to needing their own space though.
-Emery is our big sleeper (at night, at least). She would probably have slept through the night every night from the day we brought her home from the hospital if we didn't wake her up when Adelyn wakes up, and I'm not exaggerating at all.
-Due to their natural hairstyles, Landon calls Adelyn "Team Mohawk" and Emery "Team Swirly." :)
-They are starting to hold their heads up pretty well.

Our sweet girls have been such a joy!!! Although our days are busy and sometimes overwhelming, we wouldn't trade this time for anything. People often say that our hands are full, and we agree, but they are full of wonderful things!

Birth Blog: Adelyn and Emery's Birth Day

Adelyn and Emery were scheduled to arrive via c-section on Thursday, July 28th, at noon at 36 weeks and 3 days gestation, but God had other plans...

As most of you know, this pregnancy has been extremely difficult for so many reasons, with one being months of painful contractions. I had contractions (real contractions, not Braxton Hicks) about 10 minutes apart, day and night, for over half of the pregnancy. For a week or so before delivery, the contractions would become closer together and more painful, but they would eventually space back out to the 10 minute mark. On the evening of Sunday, July 24th, we noticed that the contractions were consistently 3-6 minutes apart and were much more painful than usual. I think I was a little anxious (and in denial) about the girls arrival, because I convinced Landon that we didn't need to go to the hospital unless I was still having the contractions in the morning.

After a sleepless night for me, and a restful night for Landon, we began timing my contractions again. They were still about 3-6 minutes apart, but most were about a minute in duration. We decided to call my mom to come and watch Benton while we headed to Labor and Delivery to be evaluated.

We checked into Labor and Delivery between 8:30 and 9:00am. They quickly put me in a room. Upon checking my cervix, they found me to be dilated to 4cm and fully effaced, and Baby A's (Adelyn) head was pretty much engaged and ready. The decision to proceed with a c-section was made immediately since I was in active labor. This is were things started happening FAST.

We called our families to let them know that it was the big day (we had about 5 minutes to call everyone), Landon dressed in his scrubs, and they began prepping me for surgery.

My OB, Dr. Wilks, was out of town, so one of her partners, Dr. Wayman, performed the c-section.

From the time we checked into the hospital until the time the girls were delivered was only a little over an hour! Landon was able to watch the c-section and even take pictures of the girls being delivered. He also was able to watch as the pediatric team evaluated the girls in the operating room. Since the girls were healthy and stable, they were able to go to recovery with me!!!

Everything happened so quickly that the only person able to make it to the hospital in time for the delivery was my dad! (My mom was with Benton at our house, otherwise she would have been able to make it on time).

When it comes to things in the medical field, I am usually the calm one and Landon is the apprehensive one. For once, Landon was the calm one! He was READY to meet his sweet girls!

We are so grateful that Adelyn and Emery stayed in my belly for 36 weeks. It is truly a miracle that they were born full term for twins!!! Thank you for your prayers.
